Lots to cover there, and when it comes to species and names it gets even more difficult!!

Start with Bornemans book (available at Seascapes and most other LFS)

its a matter of seeing lots of them on a regular basis, in person or in pix! It is a repetative thing, you begin to see subtle differences after seeing them a bunch and comparing them.
I'd start with a good ole google search on images and get rolling that way

What are you running for lights? That's one of the biggest factors on what will survive in your tank.

Truthfully PCs will limit what you can put in there. Most softies will be ok. Stoney's(Both SPS and LPS) would be a real gamble, although not impossible depending on placement. When I first started I had the same fixture and the only things I could keep alive were zoanthids, star polyps, and xenia. Even those were starved for light I think, because as soon as I upgraded my lighting they took off in growth. Keep an eye out on these forums for deals on lighting as there are usually some steals to be had!

With that shallow of a tank T5s would open up a bunch of options for you.
