Lightbulb Fish Food

I have been doing some research on homemade fish food so thought today I would jump head on and do it....nothing else to do right?

I added:

1lb raw shrimp
1lb tilipia
1lb salmon
1 jar raw uncooked oysters
1/2 pkg of frozen krill (just cause I had it lol)
1 small package nori
3 cloves garlic
some formula 1 & 2 flake food
cyclopeeze
and some coral food

Blended her all up and put her in 4 quart size ziplocs and popped her in the freezer.

I saved a little baby spoonful so I could put in the tank right away and see what Dori and the others thought and they gobbled it right up! I am so excited about this as Dori wouldnt touch Nori on a clip or anywhere else so now I know she is getting what she needs and then some!

I am sure I could and probably should have added more but there were so many varying recipes out there that I just went with what I had. If there is something you think I should have put and didnt let me know what it is and why?

If you would like a "tester" to see if your fish will eat it let me know and I will be happy to break ya off a piece!

Sounds like some good stuff! I'm not that proactive though! I just get the frozen saltwater blend and formula 2 and mix them up with garlic and seachem fuel! Fish seem to like it!

That is what I was originally going to get but when I looked at the ingrediants list everything was pre-cooked which meant less nutrients I would think so skipped it for fresh. Took me about 20 minutes to put together I am guessing.

I used to make my own. We would get a bunch of reefers, buy the food and then spend a couple of hours making it. We would split it up when we were done. I like using the mini ice cube trays from the dollar store and I had vitamins and selcon to the mixture.

Did you puree the garlic?

Yes I did so it would distribute throughout the entire mixture. What kind of vitamins? Was there a bottle you bought?

I would steam (don't boil) anything that's uncooked to eliminate any possible parasites. I used the frozen seafood mix from the grocery store (be sure to avoid anything with added preservatives) that has shrimp, cod, squid, mussels and clams. I added nouri, Cyclopeze, Selcon and a dash of water from the minced garlic jar too. I put it in a gallon size Ziploc and laid it flat in the freezer, then took it out and cut it into small cubes and put them back in the bag in the freezer. The fish, crabs, snails and corals loved it.

While I don't do this personally I did buy some from Andy Ummfish that my fish really liked! I know he'd know the exact recipe and such! It sounds cool to do but like gomo, I'm just too lazy to actually do it lol.

Making me hungry. Just add some fresh spinach and chilis and you have caldo. Good soup, but it stinks too.

Dane, you can get small ice cube trays at the dollar store that size.

Since I have SPS, LPS and zoas, I also include the reef food and other trace element solutions when I mix the food in the food processor. That way, every time I throw a cube of frozen food in the water, I'm adding trace amounts of those supplements too. I think it's less of a shock to the system than adding a bunch once a week.

It's really hard to make a frozen blender food that's bad for the inhabitants. Just make sure you're not adding something that has preservatives.

I think one of the keys could be to hand chop the oyster and other delicate tissue proteins and hand fold them into the mixture at the last minute. this should keep things a little more intact and not just pureed into a slimey goo. Also I wouldn't cook anything, its gonna be frozen anyways. Cooking robs vitamins and takes alot of the nutritional value away.
