    April Reefer of the month

Jason and Heather Davis are April's reefers of the month. Their current tank is a 210 AGA tank with dual overflows. This system started out as two 65 gallon tanks, one for each of them, and quickly morphed in to this beautiful 210.

Tank has about 300lbs of live rock. There are 3 Highseas 1250 gph wavemakers, 1 Koralia Evolution 1400 gph, Red Sea Wavemaster Pro. Tank houses SPS, LPS, softies and lots of fish. It is truly a mixed reef.

They use a 55 gallon sump/refugium. The sump has a tubofloater skimmer powered by an Ocean runner needle wheel pump, two quietone 4000 return pumps. They use a digital temperature controller, controlling twin 300 watt ceramic element heaters. A Tsunami ATO keeps the sump topped off with RO/DI.

Lighting is provided by 3 Lumenbright reflectors housing 400 watt Reeflux 20K bulbs. They also supplement with 4 LEDs and 2 R2 moonlights.

Yes. The tang police have been called.

They have a lot of beautiful frags, and I really want to see it in a year when they're even more beautiful.

Any one is welcome to come check it out. Already added some new stuff since Saturday. Definately glad to have 400's. Our growth is super sweet when you look at picks from a month ago. Looking to add another Koralia Evo or two tonight and now I am shopping for a RKE w/net too. Don't tell my wife!

I have three cleaner shrimp and a neon goby. Pump has been back up for the last week. I have been using Kent Garlic Extreme for the past week as well. Everyone seems to be doing better, but my clowns look like crap still.

What reef safe meds are there? Jim at SS said I could treat but it would cost about $160. I am looking through Foster and Smith catalog and I am not seeing anything that pricey.

I don't think there is a reef safe med for ich. The only treatment is copper and that will kill your inverts and poison your rock/sand. It is also difficult to keep the copper at the correct level with Rock/sand in a tank.

    From one of our Buddies up north;

Oodinium is a nasty little critter..... I've misdiagnosed or not seen it in time on a couple of occasions. Quick treatment with copper is the only cure I've found, but often, the cure is as deadly as the disease. Many fish do not tolerate the amount of copper required to kill oodinium.

    My favorite QT drugs include:
Cupramine - Easy to use and measure copper treatment, not all fish tolerate treatment well. Not a good prophylactic.

Paraguard (great for 1 hour dips on new fish) - Can also be used in the QT

General Cure - Good antihemtic (worms/flukes) All my fish go through an initial GC treatment after they begin eating.

Furan-2 - Good antibacterial treatment that isn't harsh on your biological filter. I often combine this with Cupramine to combat external abrasions from becoming infected (excessive scratching from Ich).

Prazi-Pro - after the fish have been through a week of GC and have been clean for 3-4 weeks, they get two treatments of Prazi to combat latent eggs. Flukes is a terrible thing.

Hypo-salinity - It's not a medication, but certainly is a great treatment. Most of my new acquisitions spend their first month in hypo. You can combine all meds above while using hypo, just be careful with copper... keep it below .3 ppm. Hypo has NO effect on oodinium, but is highly effective against Ich.

Many folks don't want to keep a QT up and running, and I've found a few live bacteria agents that works great for newly setup QTs. Seachem Stability does a great job of establishing and maintaining a QT tank. I use this along with Seachem Ammonia Alerts to continually monitor the QT tank. For a heavily loaded QT, I mix Stability with APIs Stress Zyme for the first few days.

There are many treatments on the market that I have had little or no success with in marine aquariums. I'd rate most of them as poor to terrible, and sadly, your fish will die anyway:

    Coppersafe
    RidIch+
    Lifeguard
    Maroxy
Maracyn [Erythromycin] (good for cyano though)
    Maracyn-Two
    Super Ich Cure
    Stop-parasites
Clout (It works but is very harsh of fish, if it doesn't cure them it kills them)
    Fungus Cure
    GreenEx [Malachite Green]
    No-Ich Marine
    Kent Rx P
    KickIch

Tetra used to sell Marin-Oomed, which turned out to be a great treatment for oodinium. If you mixed it with a dechlorinator, such as Prime, you managed to kill everything in the tank though. Tetra pulled it from the US market, but it's still available in Canada.

If in doubt...... they stay in QT.... typically 3 months, sometimes longer.
