    Too Much Light for Gigas?

    Or too little????

My Gigas is getting areas that are looking more brown? Never heard of a clam changing color, and not sure what to make of this... The clam is right under 4 overdriven T5's (2AquaBlue and 2Blue+) so I can't imagine too little light, but not sure what to do... I can't move it and can't really shade it... Should I sell the Gigas for now? I don't want this guy to suffer in any way.

    Thoughts?

Eric, I believe you may be treading in uncharted waters. I have never heard of anyone with a T. gigas as close to the T5's as you have this specimen. I have seen very bright T. crocea loose there color do to lack of light. Is the lights levels where the gigas is in your tank similar to where it came from in Russ' tank? If it were mine I would let the gigas be for the time being and watch him very closely. I might even reduce the photo period till the color change ceased then very slowly start to increase the time to its former position.

If the clams health or life seem to be in jeopardy I would move it to the 225 and get it put up for sale.

    But that is just me.

It probably just has to adjust. It's pretty extreme differences from Russ' tank to yours. More than the type of light and intensity but also from an established tank to a young tank.

I have Par at about 375-400 at the mantel, not sure what Russ had but I think I'm going to let it go if anyone is interested. I know it will out grow the tank so it will eventually have to go, but I was hoping to get to keep it longer.

Looking back at some old Par readings, the gigas was getting around 360 par in my tank.

Looking at the Par meter thread, Chris (Reefkoi) has his gigas at 400 par.

Then it must be new tank syndrome... Or something else I'm missing. Clam is acting fine, but I'm nervous about the color shift and this guy is too cool to be thinking about what I want. If anyone is interested, price is the same as what Russ wanted.

Thanks Russ! I love that clam, so I'm really really bummed. Maybe I'll try a clam again in a few months... That is, if I can find a buyer for this one first.

How did you get them to take it?
    Buy, sell, or donation.
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

And remember you can always lead a horticulture, but you can't make her think.

It was just a trade... Better deal for them, but I was able to get something in return...
