    Filtration Media

I have posted in the past about using lava rock in a sump to become "live rock" for filtration purposes, didn't have many replies still trying to figure stuff out. I know that some folks use a ceramic media usually in a canister or similar setup. There is a local ceramic shop that will give me broken pieces (un-glazed, only had first firing), would this be a good media with large surface area for filtration media in a sump?

well the problem with the broken peace's is there's no way to tell how pores they are, that's what's determines weather they would make good bio media. as for lava rock I had tried that in the past and with in a short period of time I started having problems with hair algae and stuff because the lava rock trapped so much detritus with in the rocks. But guess you could always try the broken stuff and see how it does. if worst comes to worst you could remove and toss, But I just use live rock as my bio media these days never have had any problems but then again I have a habit of going heavy on live rock but I like the way it looks lots of caves and hiding spots for the little friends living in the tank.
