    Aiptasia taking over my cube!

I have a 60 gal cube and I have a major problem with aiptasia. Every time I kill it with aiptasia X I still end up getting in about 15 or 20 more within a week or two. What has worked for you guys in the past? Should I get a filefish or some peppermint shrimp?

If you don't have anything that will eat shrimp, go for 5-10 shrimp. If something will eat them, filefish.

I fought aiptasia for 17 years and tried everything with only limited success. No matter where I bought the peppermint shrimp from they didn't do the job. I finally bought a matted filefish and he took care of the problem -- or so I thought. When he jumped out of the tank it only took a few months before the aiptasia came back with a vengeance. What does a vengeance look like? This!

Ignore the cyno and algae -- that was a different fight.

So what cured the problem? Berghia nudibranchs purchased from Neptunes in Denver for around $10 each: http://www.neptunestropical.com/

There's a few catches though. Shrimp and some fish will eat the nudibranchs so it's best to remove the rock to a 10 gal tank and then let them do their job. More importantly, once they've done their job they will die from lack of food as the only thing in the world they eat is aiptasia.

That said, unlike all other treatments the Berghia leave nothing behind and are simply amazing.

I started with four and now have two really big ones. They're supposed to breed easily and even though mine have laid eggs I haven't seen new little guys running around. My problem these days is that I'm trying to raise aiptasia so I'll take all you have. If you'd like to leave your rocks with me my guys will clean them off but they need to be free of corals.

Do you have a photo of your tank?

The problem with that is that all my corals have shifted from the plugs to the rocks and I am trying to avoid removing the rock work.

You could try a molly miller blenny. I've got one I bought at MACNA last year and think its a cool fish. For some reason it's one of my favorites even though it isn't anything special as far as colors go. It's kinda fast and hangs out near the top of the tank. I didn't have aiptasia, I just wanted one. Check out this article http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2012/9/fish

JJ has my filefish in one of the frag flats I believe, if it is still alive, feel free to snag him and use him to eliminate your problem. Know that he never picked at a bubble tip but if you have a condy nem he may go after it.

Then you have a couple options:

    1. Get the Berghia and see if they survive.
    2. Quarantine the dottyback as it is the only fish that "might" eat them.

Seriously though -- 17 years of trying everything in more tanks than I can count and Berghia are the only things I've seen completely eradicate aiptasia -- anything else will only help control them. In the tank photo I showed I had five peppermint shrimp in there all from different suppliers and they didn't even bother the aiptasia.

Suppliers aren't the issue, it's where they get there's from. If they don't know them chances are they're indo region like everyone else and they never do anything. I keep peps in al my flats and even when aptasia comes in its never there within days of going into any of the tanks. I have (and everyone who's gotten from me as far as I'm told) has great success with the peps I bring in. And they're dirt cheap too.

I'm hoping on bringing in an order of both Peppermint shrimp and berghia within the next two weeks, give or take on sales, for you guys who are wanting them

Just don't combine Berghia and Peppermints as the shrimp will eat the nudibranchs.
