    DIY Bio Pellet reactor

With all of the interest in bio pellet reactors lately. I have decided to put mine into use. I built this about a year ago and am not able to find the pics. As soon as I find the build pics I will post them.
For now, here is the operation of my design. I started with a maxijet 1200 and a pop bottle. Added some plumbing and a valve for flow control. Here it is installed.
This unit is in the sump of my frag system. The drains into the sump are to the right of the skimmer and reactor. You can see my phyto rack to the left. I put it in the sump so I can use the sump light for dual purpose, cheato and phyto with out having another light on somewhere else.

Here is a close up of the reactor. With the flow control valve at the output line.

The acrylic that is on top of the pump holds the output in position which stablizes the bottle.

I have the output of the reactor directed to the input of my protein skimmer.

This reactor has been in operation for since Oct 27. I have started in the last couple of days that I don’t need to clean the glass as often any more.

I’ll keep this thread updated with my results.

I checked it out in person and will be making one soon! This works well, the beads tumble like they should. Might be a cool DIY idea for Christmas party?

Do you have anything to keep the pellets from falling into the pump when/if you turn it off?

I do. It is a screen just like the one at the pump input. If you look at the closeup of the pump, you can see it.

This might sound dumb. But what's the purpose of this reactor? Does it take stuff out? Add stuff? Just interested.

It grows and sustains a bacteria culture that helps eradicate nitrates.

Well after several months of running this reactor. I have decided that it doesn't work. I believe that it is too small for my system. So I am now building a bigger reactor to try.

    Stay tuned.

This is by far the coolest diy i have seen in the hobby. I am very impressed. Can you throttle it down?

I love how it looks like a fish as well.

Thanks, it was fun to build. I can throttle it down. I just need to put the ball valve on it from the last reactor.

I would like to do an experiment some time and see what the desired tumble rate would be for an average tank. There are many deflicting stories on what a good speed is. Maybe you can make another small reactor and I can find a few 10 gallon tanks and we can compare when i get back?

To get perfectly round it requires large diameter acrylic tube which is Very expensive, like $100 a foot etc. if we could do a group buy we could cut the cost down a little.
