I'm leaning towards the salt as well. Your older buckets was probably low on levels or nutrients as you got to the bottom and then you cracked open a new one and put freshness it wasn't used to And scared all the sps away

Well, main point is no-one knows why it happens. You can do everything to prevent it but if its going to happen it's going to happen.

Had a conversation about this other day too. Same end result of conversation. No-one knows. Wish there was a better answer for you.

Well I figured I'd chime in a bit. I agree a mature tank will usually result in better SPS growth, but it's not completely necessary. When I set up my 90, I put SPS in a month after set up. Of course I cycled with live sand and got some mature live rock from a reefer up in Denver. After the month cycle, I transferred everything from my biocube into the 90. That was in Oct '13 and now I pretty much have only SPS. What I've noticed is that the smaller frags of SPS take a little bit to get going. I've had a couple of frags not have much growth vertical growth and some encrusting, but then it just hits a point and starts growing like crazy. The main thing with SPS is stability. Stability Promotes Success. With that said, I agree the salt could have been a factor. The test kits could also be throwing you off, maybe a bad reading if the kit is old (check expiration date). I'd test for Mg too. It's not something that has to be tested often but if you want SPS you will have to test for it. You want to make sure your Alk is dialed in first. If it's not right, it will throw off the others. Also, doing a bunch of water changes quickly could be kinda freaking things out in the tank as well. There's a ton of info online, here's one link about sticks http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/18053...s-coral-guide/ I'd also look up RTN online and you can find out about the causes of it and see if any pertain to your tank.
