It's a teal color under the lights. My fingers are crossed.

A weird thing happened to that thick acro. I watched as just one branch bleached over a few hours about 3 weeks after getting it. It's not turning brown with algae, and looks like it may still be alive after 4 weeks. The other one is looking great. Time will tell. Picked up some Red Planet, a nice stylo and a couple other SPS frags including a pale purple Formosa, and a blue squamosa in Anchorage a couple weeks ago. They've acclimated well and I'll be moving them to their permanent locations soon.

That glossy purple sponge from Key's is really doing well, too. I think I could sell or trade a frag to one of the three LFSs in Alaska for something choice. That's right, there are exactly 3 LFSs in Alaska that specialize in SW (doesn't include Petco, where the fish go to die in Alaska). Two are in Anchorage, and a third is in Soldotna 500 miles away and the only one on the Kenai Peninsula (where the Kilchers live).

So it looks like the issue must've been that the LEDs are too intense. I moved it halfway down in the tank and I see that the polyps are fully extended now. After some analysis and measurements, I realized that when I converted most of the whites to blue-violet spectrum I ended up providing much more PUR than I thought. Blue-violet photons are much more energetic, so I must've exceeded the photoinhibition point. Bummer. I guess that's a lesson learned--while blue LEDs look less bright to the eye, they definitely pack a lot of energy.

Another observation: I added 4 low wattage led spotlights, I think 40W replacements, across the top of the hood. I measured total PAR at somewhere near 1,000 at the top of the LR, blue LEDs included. I removed them right away, but it's something to think about if I ever switch to a deeper tank.

They switched to a pay to play model that is absolutely ridiculous.

It took 2 hours to download pics individually from Photobucket. They want a buck a day? Robbery.

That's on my bucket list. When can I come crash at your house and wait for the light show?

Just bring frags. Moving back to Alaska was on my bucket list too. My best friend from Colorado came up here last August to see Alaska and I drove him to the Arctic Circle, which was on his bucket list. He passed away in February from a brain tumor.

It's so unpredictable. You need to wait for a cloudless sky. Even then, there's no guarantee that the Aurora will ever show up that night. Even then, you need to be awake at the right time. I've seen it at 7 at night and 6 in the morning and at odd times in between. When it does show up, it can be a light haze or waving bands of light or flashes across the sky.
