Greetings from the Great White North

Hey all. Auggie and I finally settled in here in Fairbanks. We had our first cold snap. It was a balmy -33F the other day. Moose the Great Dane needs a coat and booties to go outside when it's below minus 10. The main roads here are covered in 2 inches of ice, which is normal. I ditched my factory all-season (ha!) radials for some studded ice and snow tires on the Subaru Forester. Sunrise was 10:55 and sunset was 3:19. On December 21st we'll have 3 hours and 41 minutes of sun if it's not cloudy. Sometimes I wonder why I came back up here, but I think about the spring and summer ahead. At least the Aurora has been entertaining lately. It's directly overhead.

I've been watching the Craigslist ads and can't believe what they're asking for aquariums up here. Fairbanks is pretty small (population 32,000 in the entire county). Consider that El Paso County has 90% of the total population of all of Alaska. Everything costs a lot more, and there's a lot less of it. It takes 2-6 weeks to ship things up here, so you need to plan ahead.

Water up here can be pretty bad. Most of the wells in my area have a lot of arsenic, so it's trucked in. Most people haul water from community wells with better water. You see a lot of pickup trucks here with 300 gallon water tanks in back.

Energy costs are incredibly high here. Monthly heating bills can be $2000 in the coldest part of winter. Electricity is at least twice the cost of Mountain View Electric, and pretty unreliable in the middle of winter.

Yet with all that going on, I still plan on a reef tank. The only pet shop with livestock is Petco. There are no other fish stores here, so I'll have to make do with Petco, online orders, and the very few reefers up here who have something to trade or sell. This should definitely put my DIY and creative scrounging skills to the test. I plan to fly to C Springs to see my kids in the spring. We may come down to Denver in August for MACNA. I may bring back some frags.

Sounds like a cool place right now. Ba domp bing! I love the Summer up there but have never had a chance to check out the winter. Seeing the aurora is on my bucket list. Maybe I could deliver a coral order to you. You buy, I'll fly.

Well, I can pay for shipping, or provide a room for a visitor. I need an established tank first.

Sunrise 10:31, sunset 2:52. Sun maxed out 2.9 degrees above the horizon...

I should be picking up a used 55G corner unit Saturday.

Nice. I've always liked the corner tanks.

Actually it was cloudy all day so it was kind of dreary, but it looks like you guys ended up with a colder temperature than we had today

I was going to go check what your temp was yesterday. It has been flasbacks to Ft Drum, NY for me this last few days.

I heard you had a bit of a cold spell recently. I had to chuckle. I got to my car after work tonight, unplugged the electric cord for the heaters, got in the car and the door wouldn't latch completely after several tries. It took a few seconds for the transmission to take hold when I put it in gear. As I drove away it was like driving with square tires. It smoothed out after about a mile. The sign on base said it was minus 46 Fahrenheit.

That's awesome. When it's so cold your tires have flat spots. I remember the old bias ply tires used to do that a lot.
    Stay warm my friend.

It took some persistence, but I finally found a big tank and stand in great condition. I found a lusting on CL for a 100g plus stand. It had been used as a reptile tank. The guy wanted $1500 or reasonable offer. Long story short, I got it for $300 delivered. I measured it before buying and determined it was a 150. 7/16" glass. Silicone was mint.

Next step is to figure if I want bottom overflows or on the back like Glass Hole overflows and drill some holes.

What an incredible find. I'm sure whatever you do for over flows will be top notch.
How are the dogs liking it up there?

We had to put Auggie's wolfhound down last August. Heart problem. The shepherd loves it here. The Dane is ok with it as long as he's wearing his dog hoodie.
