ok, I am going to replace the EV-180 and I am debating on what skimmer to get.... I think its down to a Tunze 9015, or an ORCA Needle wheel 8.5" R.C. Skimmer.

Here are the specs on the ORCA
This skimmer is built from heavy duty 1/4" American made cast acrylic tube.It includes Heavy duty sch 80 low profile neck union, 1.5" sch 80 gate valve for fine water level adjustment and a bolt off top for total access to skimmer body.It will be standard w/ the H3 pumps( same as Ocean Runner 3500and Octopus 3000) equiped w/ needle wheel impeller.

I am pretty sure Russ's Sicce 1 is to tall to fit under my stand, but I asked them if they make them smaller, so we will see.

They also have this bubble master style

anyway, what do you guy's think I should do?

what about the Octopus recircs?

Bubble plate diffuser and sicce pump is a good combo. You can also go for the ATI BubbleMaster 200. It should be short enough to fit under your stand. Or you can go for the gusto and get a Bubble King mini 180.

Not recirculating but I read good things about this skimmer

So I have never had a recirc. skimmer, and I am assuming that since it's processing the water more then once, it's more effecient?

BubbleKing mini 180..... yeah I wish I had a grand to drop on one...

Its all about preference. Some folks like recirc since the skimmer has to be external and not in the sump. Cant say if either is better. I know Chris BK in not recirc but it kicks azz. Bubble king minis are not recirc but I really havent seen any reviews on them.

Well, lets see what Shan at Orca Systems can come up with.

Yep, tank drains directly into the skimmer and the recirc pump keeps the water contact time to make it more efficient.

ah, ok. Well I don't want an external skimmer, I don't even have room for it, not to mention I don't need it draining my tank on to the floor accidentally.

Hence the reason why my recirc skimmer is in my sump

so I couldn't run this guy in sump? If it's just sitting there, and I feed it from another pump?

Sure you can. Just need an additional pump like a MJ 900 to feed it. But might as well go with the bubble plate as a feature.

I also asked if they can put the bubble plate on this one, so we will see.

That top barb valve on the top left is where you would feed the skimmer, either from the tank or from a pump in the sump.

Recirculation protein is more efficient due to more water contact time but it also depend on how much water you are feeding through it. I would take the 2nd protein skimmer in the picture. Cicci pump produce lots of fine bubble also doesn't produce much heat as well as the eheim pump. I have try the ocean runner with needle wheels before in the octopus 3000. It doesn't produce much bubble as you expected but the pump run SUPER HOT .

Bubble master 200, BK mini is good but skimming kinda wet due the length of the body and the amount of contact time is too short

Tunze 9015 work very well if you dial it in properly.

The bubbleking minis with the pump mounted down inside the skimmer are very cool! They are the most compact high end skimmer I have seen.
They are just so damn cool! Larry you really get what you pay for in a skimmer, and honestly if size is an issue I can tell you these things are packed in about as tight as you will get!

Chris, that protein skimmer aren't as good as you think. Lots of people were disappointed because their BK mini (so call high end skimmer) did not skim right or did not produce the dark skimmate. For the money, i rather go with the ORCA with cicci pump and eheim

I am overwhelmed with all the skimmers...
I hear the ASM G-series are good for the price.

Larry,
How did you narrow it down to the Orca and Tunze?

LDogg
01-31-2008, 03:05 PM
well, honestly Kevin, I figured the tunze was really compact, and I saw the results russ has gotten from ORCA. plus I can customize theirs too. I am open to ASM and Euro reef too, as well as any others.

I didn't know the mini's didn't work good Steve, you are more up to date on the latest products than me ;)
Doesn't H&S make a good that would fit under a stand Steve??? What about Deltec??

Chris, sorry i didn't get a chance to reply lastnight on the protein skimmer stuff

H&S normal heigh between 24-32" tall. Very reliable, solid build (like BK), as efficient as Deltec but much cheaper, better quality material compare to deltec. The eheim NW was slightly modify but it was molded instead of using router like Deltec

Check out the ATB cone skimmers. There not cheap, but Ive heard some really good stuff about them.

ATB protein skimmer is very good and also energy efficient especially when they use the Red Dragon pump on it. Talking about small foot print protein skimmer, i think ATB has a very small foot print.
