Just wondering what you guys were running? I've read a few different methods and so far, it seems 24/7 is fine. I'm just running cheato in mine. (It's just the 2nd chamber in my BC.) Thanks! - Nathan

When my display lights are off, my sump lights come on. It helps to stabilize the Ph in your tank by the cheato taking in the CO2 that is still being produced in the tank and not causing a drop in Ph from the build up of dissolved CO2 in your water which has a Ph lowering effect as it produces carbonic acid when dissolved in water. You can run 24/7 to help with nitrate uptake, but you will loose some of the Ph stabilizing effect. I am no botanist, but I would bet that plants, just like everything else, need some dark time everyday too to be at their healthiest.

I run 18 a day, over my Turf algae scrubber. You are right, Jason, plants need dark too.

I run mine about 14+hrs a day... kinda half and half as far as weather its when my other lights are on. i have thought about doing the full reverse timing tho.

Not true. Plants don't need darkness for anything. The dark reaction of photosynthesis is a bit of a misnomer. It's called the dark reaction because it doesn't need light to occur, not because it occurs at night. In fact, most of the dark reaction occurs during the day. That's where carbon dioxide is converted to sugar.

I can't believe I still remember most of this from my HS Biology II class my junior year. That was like...ten years ago.
