I started my setup with 20K PlusRite SE MH bulbs (They look a lot more like 14Ks) and seem to be having good results... my corals seem pretty happy. Anyone else use/try these? They are $14.52/pc @ 1000bulbs.com. Is there really any good reason to spend more for better known brand bulbs?

Did you check the PAR on them? I'd be interested to see some comparisons.

I have often wondered about that myself. The ones I was looking at were about 25.00
But the lfs said you get what you pay for. SO................I PAID FOR LIKE 80.00 BUCKS.
Please let us know. I heard the par was ok but the life was short. but even if it only lasts 6 months that's still 30.00 compared to 80.00
Let us know !

I've got a couple pics in my gallery, but they don't really show the lighting well. I'd be happy to let anyone come look at them running or borrow a bulb to test in their own system - they're 250W. I can't really see a big difference myself between them or the brand-name bulbs, but haven't put a PAR meter to it.

Karlin, how long have they been on? We need to get you the PAR meter and get some numbers now and at 6 months and again at 9 months and 12, if you go that long. At $15 a bulb, it would be cost effective to replace them every 6 months.

I've had them running for about 3 months now @ 7hrs/day.

I got them once and I would say the 14k looked more like 10k. Other than that no complaint but I don't know about par readings because I never checked.

Murfg, these have to be the Chinese-made bulbs we tried. Mine worked fine and my SPS rocketed. You didn't like yours from a different source.

Followup - I just replaced these bulbs with another set of the same bulbs. I probably could have kept them longer, but their bluesih tone was starting to fade enough to bother me. For anyone wanting to keep these bulbs blue, I'd say replace them at least every 6 months or so. I never did test the par, but I've been happy with my coral growth, even at the bottom of my 2' deep tank.
