I like mushrooms, leathers, and zoas mostly right now, but I like anything that is really colorful. I have a really nice frogspawn and torch coral, and I adore my clam and scallops. I also like star fish and feather dusters a lot. But I never thought my fish would be my favorite thing in my reef tank.

I am a Multimedia Specialist/Computer Graphic Artist. I am a published photographer and illustrator. I enjoy helping people express things creatively with my Photoshop skills! I am working on my third college degree, a Masters in Multimedia. I'm afraid I spend too much homework time staring at my tank!

My name is John, my wife Alisa and I moved here to Colorado Springs from the "motherland" UK 6 years ago. I am a Brit, born and bred, my wife is a Southern girl from Alabama!

I first was introduced to the saltwater passion back in England - 9 years ago when my wife bought me my first 30 gal tank for my 30th birthday. I setup a mixed fish and invert tank with live rock, upgraded to a 50 gal, contructed a homemade lighting fixture, canister filters, skimmer, fluid bed filter etc. Alas, in the UK back then, not much equipment & technology was available and a lot you had to make many things for yourself. We battled for years with Nitrates in the water (did not have an RO/DI unit), insufficient lighting, cooling etc. Sadly when we moved to the USA I gave away all my tank(s), livestock.

After a year here in Colorado we purchased a 180gal tank, vho lights, sump, skimmer etc, ro/di unit. Alas, after cycling and stocking, this became nicknamed as the "Death TANK" - due to the now infamous demise of 200 lbs of fiji live rock (became dead rock) and everything else that was in the tank at the time. Some unknown contaminent had gotten into the tank and basically killed everything, no amount of water changes, carbon etc, saved us or the contents. That put us off the hobby for a few years as you can imagine! A couple of years ago we again returned to the saltwater love and, after thoroughty clearning, disinfecting, cleaning, rinsing, lots of praying to the Reef Gods, spun up the tank and slowly started over.

The tank is once again up and running, 180 gallons, vho lights (6x96w), sump (20 gallon), skimmer (aqua-c), homemade chiller (using a refridgerator and 96 ft of tubing). The "Death-TANKS" deadrock is live once again, after obtaining another 40 lbs of liverock. We have a wonderful leather 8-10" coral that's grown steadily for 2 years and left multiple juveniles as it slowly wanders around. Some furry mushroom's, green star polyps. We also have a yellow tang who has happily lived for 2 years, a black/white clown (uses the leather as her home) and a pack of juvenile Concivt Blennies (recent additions). Sadly the clown's partner died a year ago of unknown causes (simply vanished) and the pair of allen's damsel's jumped out of the tank without a safety net a few months back. (prompting addition of egg-create to to of tank as otherwise it was open). Other assorted small hermits, nasarius snails, a monsterous green brittle star, a sand shifting star and a tiger cucumber form our limited detritous cleaning team.

The "death-TANK" continues to improve slowly, and we continue to battle out most recent plague, "Aptasia" /shiver. These vile, devil's spawn little critters manged to recently kill our bubble coral, candy and slipper corals, the soft corals seemingly to be more resistant to their infestation. No amount of injecting, pasting with Kalwasser stops them or their progress. Our hope is to one day manage to return to the healthy Reef mixed community tank we had to give away in England when we moved.

So, that's if for us so far. It is great to find a Reef Community here in Colorado Springs!

Warm Regards,
John & Alisa

John & Alisa, wecome to SCMAS! Hopefully was can help you guys get that tank looking the way you want it! For your aptasia problem, start by adding about 5-10 peppermint shrimp (not camel shrimp) and see if you can find a Copper Banded Butterfly... Between the shrimp and fish, the aptaisia will disappear.

Many thanks for the warm welcome. We already tried the "Peppermint" shrimp approach. Alas, the poor little creatures vanished within a few weeks (it's possible that my green brittle star found them appetising or something did!). I'll start a different thread to discuss our war on Aptasia, though would say that I have a CopperBanded on order, though am still waiting for the LFS to have a healthy one for delivery. Both Alisa and I are looking forwards to being a part of a community to discuss, share our joys and failures together with. One day the "death-TANK" shall have a new name !!!

Kind Regards,

What effect did you use for the picture? It looks a bit wicked and scary
It's just an effect that came with our Kodak software called "cartoon". I use the effect for most of the pictures I take. They come out a little grainy but it takes hours to do something like that in Photoshop compared to a few clicks of a mouse. The only problem is you need good light to get a nice effect. Here's a few pictures I've done with it:

I love cartoon effects. I have a half dozen ways to do it in Photoshop, depending on the lighting. I really love the one with the tattoed guy, that turned out really wicked. It's especialy fun to use with masks, making the person normal and the background "cartoon" or vice versa. there's a really simple way to do it with gaussian blurs, but I digress :)

Gaussian blurs you say? hmm... I really need to play with Photoshop more... I like how easy the Kodak software is but I think it would look a lot cleaner with a little Photoshop knowledge. I really want all of my photos to look like the movies "Waking Life" or "Scanner Darkly"... somewhere between reality and cartoon ya know.

Hi everyone, My name is Freedom and I just started my first saltwater tank back in November of 2007, I have been lurking around here and Reef Central trying to learn as much as I can. Until recently I had only kept fresh water tanks with Piranhas and Oscars, I currently have 2 55 gal fresh water tanks, a 29 gal bow front and a 75 gal saltwater with 20 gal wet/dry sump. I live on the west side of the Springs very close to my new favorite place to spend money, Neptune's Realm.

Love the skimmer. I had a BubbleMaster 250 before this one. Pumps constantly stalled, build quality wasn't that great. This skimmer feels really solid, and I love the external pump. Very reliable and pulls out tons of stuff. I must pull out at least twice the dark skimate compared with the BM250.

Hello again,

think i posted here a few months ago and disapeared. Well, right now i have a very eclectic 60 gal. freshwater. contains 5 cichlids, 1 bichir, 1 Jack Dempsey, and newly purchased dragon fish. Only death so far (about 6 months). has been my puffer fish. Unknown what killed him.

Anyway, I'm not planning on adding much more to this tank, and would like to begin purchasing a tank and items for a reef or fish w/ live rock tank. I saw an ad at Neptune's Realm that reminded me of this site. I'll more than likely be buying equipment pieces at a time, since i can't run out and buy a 100 gal. reef tank new, haha. I have much learning to do also, reading on the net just confuses everything more. Hopefully my girlfriend and I will be able to come to some meetings to get good advice. We're planning on a 90 or 100 gal. tank, did i repeat myself (tired). so will have PLENTY of time to learn what is needed to maintain healthy tank.

thanks, and any advice or deals on equipment always welcome

Of all the sytems to go see to examine the tips and tricks for success this one definately makes my top few! Hope to see both of you there!

Thanks for the warm welcome! So now after a ton of work, cussing, and exhaustion I finally have my 55 running with a bunch of green water, and swirling sand. I wonder if my Rio 1400 is too strong of a powerhead for a 55?

Thurge
06-06-2008, 10:15 PM
It would depend on how fine your sand it. If its sugar fine sand, then its just the sand. Its just so fine and lite its very easy to get it suspended in the water column. Crushed argonite is much less likely to get suspended. Thats not to say that there is anything wrong with the finer sand, it just gets picked up easy. As for the pump being to big it all depends on the corals you are keeping. If you have SPS then you need the extra flow, but LPS and softies don't need nearly the flow.
A UV filter will take care of the green water in no time. Just go steal one from Joe he won't notice. Then when you are done with it, make sure to put it on his phyto culture. :D jk Joe.

Welcome to the board. Love the dog. Visla?

Noob
06-06-2008, 10:33 PM
Yeah, unfortunately I can't ask for anything else from Joe because he has already done a great deal for me... The reason I even have green water is because it came from his "culture"… that dude has a pretty amazing setup. Waaaaay above my head, but I am thankful for my pods swimming around in my green water.

As for the dog her name is Sadie and you are correct, she is a Vizsla. I got her from the Colorado / Wyoming rescue three years ago and she is a rotten redhead that I can't live without. She is already pointing at the tank and I don't even have any fish yet?

THEJRC
06-07-2008, 10:30 AM
he he, the green water was from the garage rig, it's not super green but it keeps the live rock real live.. it'll clear over time and definately before it's time to add stuff he he.

Really it's only about 10 gallons of water from the tank rig so it's not a phyto culture, things'll eat through it soon enough! We gotta get you an RO unit, good test kits, a good light fixture... and more importantly a larger doghouse as your probably going to be spending a bit of time in there when the wife notices how expensive this hobby is!

Noob
06-07-2008, 11:38 AM
The tank already seems clear just after one night of filtration. Sadie is obviously always in my way... I mean...helping me with everyhing as usual. I think I am going to get one more piece of live rock for the left side to even things out...what do you think?

It's a super hectic schedule with three contracts starting but between your hectic and my hectic we may be able to nab a half hour. We'll get ya square with another chunk or two of rock... then afterwards we can don our ninja outfits and raid Thurges tank for corals....

Speaking of stealing things... I put my hermit crabs and snails in to start the clean up process and after one night I woke up in the morning and freaked out because I saw just a shell and was like damn... one already died! Then ... I saw the thief walking around in his new digs. Guess he was on to bigger and better things! I am going to call him "The Don" (Donald Trump) because he is never satisfied!

Also... I noticed this thing. Not sure if it is a cool piece of coral or a bad thing... Either way, it looks cool and my tank is growing things? ha ha...

Thanks Tim. I just have two double 96 watt power compact retrofit kits (384 watts). I love sps corals but was scared to go right to halides after having only a shop light over my old 55 gal. Plus I didn't want to have to buy a chiller. I don't know, maybe it's easier than I think. That's why I want to talk to you guys and see your setups, just to see how to be efficient with good ideas and have a great tank without excessive overhead. I want sps corals! - Joe

Welcome to SCMAS Joe! Where in Springs Ranch? There are a couple of us out here. :D

No need for a chiller if you have enough air circulation... Our 225 with dual 1000w MH's actually has the heater turn on to keep the temp up. We have 3 fans running to keep the heat from the bulbs off the water. :D Works great and the cost is just a few bucks!

Hi Joe. Welcome to the group.

To combat heat I have a pair of 4" fans in my canopy that suck the hot air out of there. My tank is upstairs in the kitchen (probably the hottest room in the house) and with these two fans I can keep my temps pretty stable. On the ocasional really bad day I will open the stand and put an ocelating fan pointing into my sump and that takes care of that.

Where you live. I live in Colorado Springs

Years in the hobby:on and off for about 20 years. After I moved here I was out of the hobby for a couple of years as I though it was a temporary move. That was 12 years ago. I finally decided that Temoroary or not I wanted to get back into the hobby so have been actively reefing again for years.

Hello, Im Leo and got into this wonderful and informative aquarist url thru a
co-worker Eric (NOOB). Ive seen some members' tank and they are so clear and so colorful and so full of life.
I used to have a salt water fish tank but its been dormant for about 6 yrs now. The reason, Ive been visiting sickly parents in Cali (I'm an orphan now) and whenever I leave CS, the fishes don't eat (even fed by my friends). I think they were looking for my face. So, I turned off the tank for awhile. Then, I got into growing orchids and joined the CSOS.
I called my brother in law in Sacramento. He had a 55gal reef tank. Unfortunately, his live rocks died. I talked to him about this site and I think he was inspired and he told me he will soon start with a 100g tank...
Just want to say Hi!

Hi

I have had FW tanks since I was a child and always enjoyed the hobby.

In Feb of 07 we bought our first saltwater tank. We bought a 125, but I have suspicions that Clint was already setting me up for a bigger tank as everything we bought seemed to be on the "larger" side.

Yesterday we brought home the "new" baby. A 210. It is now sitting in my living room and I can't believe how big it looks when you get them home.

We have a "mixed" tank. I like most of the corals and of course our fish our spoiled rotten.

Our next few weeks will be spent preparing to take down the 125 and get the 210 set up. I am sure we will be asking for plenty of advice!

We have already met some of you and your warmth and welcoming help has been just wonderful.

Thanks for the welcome Huh, kirb, murfman. The more i surf around the site, the more I think of turning on my 100g tank and, maybe soon. But I have to plan it well and I have to see what's left in the tank that I can use. I may have to replace my old fluval 403 (i got in late 80's)-very old technology. THere is so much to learn and I think I MAY NEED more info so ill surf the site. This way I may have a better idea on what to set up and how...
Is there a place here for newbie to get information on tank STARTUP? Marine Aquarist Terms and Definitions? Do you have a buddy system to help newbies or, to solve problems? Are members here organized by area to create an area buddy system to help each other so you dont have to wait for the next meeting to fix any problem or concern?
Anyone here from the Security area? I live in between French Elementary in Security and Safeway/Walmart in Fountain.

anything else.... This is a pic of the tank we will be populating soon. We had a house built 3 years ago and this tank was built into the wall of our great room.
