So I'm getting the aquarium itch pretty bad right now, but I'm not sure what sounds good and what is just crazy... I'm not convinced I want to go saltwater again, and have a huge fascination with planted tanks right now, especially the iwagumi style tanks. So while I know most everyone is a reef lover (as am I), I'm wondering how/where I should put a tank... I'm throwing around ideas from a countertop nano in the bar area, all the way up to crazy shaped in-walls, but in my traditional style, I want to stay short and narrow (say 12x12xXXX). I'm planning to submit blueprints to PPRBD in the next month to begin construction in my basement but could really use a dose of reality since my wife said, just build what you want.

First image is a blank slate, walls can be changed/moved (such as making the utility room larger), so if you're willing to give me your thoughts please do so...

I just started a fresh planted tank and a little one at that. Since these little fresh tanks are so small and require very little space maybe add a niche in a wall somewhere dedicated just for a little tank.

Also, who's finishing your basement (that's what I do for a living)

I thought about that, but really wanted something more bold... Can't do anything this large, but was my initial inspiration:

As for my basement, I'm finishing it myself with a few subs... If you have an affordable reliable plumber to put in an additional drain line and relocate a couple pipes I'd be interested.

Seriously thinking about ditching the SW and going fresh with plants and Discus....Minimalist style.

Discus are fun, as are plants. I think I'll enjoy doing both, but good lord there's a lot to learn on the marine side of things.

If you do go the planted route, I'd recommend going with a dirted tank. I've been pretty happy with my dirted tanks and their long term growth.

I did the same for years. The first meeting we hosted I dirted and filled a 55 gallon tank in front of our good club here.

Hey E., glad to see you back, I would highly recommend an Texas alligator gar, the boys would find it amusing at feeding time.

Yeah, every time I look at a reef tank, first thing that goes through my head is "what if it crashes and I kill all of it". Not a good feeling, and to be honest, I haven't had a freshwater tank since I was 10 year old... Not sure I remember how to do it! LOL ;)

What is a dirted tank? Been pretty impressed by the products put out by ADA...

Def not a good one in the least bit. Especially when it's tens of thousands up in smoke. Sad day

Exactly!

So Tim, what size tank are you thinking for the niche idea? I loved my last ADA 60-P but feel I should try to go larger, unless I build out multiples...
