View Full Version : Eshopps Magnetic Frag Holder BEWARE

So I noticed that my fish were dying one by one. I tested everything possible and then I was inspecting my frag rack and boom. Water had seeped in where the magnet is and starting rusting and going back into the water. I thought how much rust could it produce. I filled a 5 gallon bucket half full and left it overnight in the morning the water was rust color. BEWARE if you have these. Lost 4 fish and a bunch of shrimp. Not 100% sure this was the cause but am pretty sure.

Ferrous oxide shouldn't cause any problems actually. GFO or granular Ferrous oxide is used to reduce phosphates. I'd look at other problems to see what else is wrong. Good catch on the exploded magnet though.

what?

Rust is ferrous oxide and GFO is basically granular rust so it really shouldn't be an issue.

Wrong. Gfo is rust, but made from iron and hydroxide.

Stainless steel is made from numerous metals. Depending on which metals can be extremely toxic to your tank. It all depends on what metal is rusting inside of the tank. My assumption is that eshopps did not make a 20 frag rack out of iron (due to cost) and probably found the cheapest brightest solution possible.

I agree that this may not be the sole purpose of the loss of livestock in his tank, but it is probably a very large cause if his levels are correct.

Magnets aren't made from stainless steel and I can't see the picture but I would hope the frag rack isn't either as stainless will rust in saltwater.

Most commonly used magnet as they are cheap and strong. Iron oxide

"Combined with one or more metallic elements". Your missing the additional metals bubba.

My bad. I meant magnets (not stainless steel). Magnets are made from numerous metals. Alot of those metals' rusts are harmful to our aquarium.

Did you really just use Wikipedia to try and poove me wrong? Time for you to wag your tail. Your better than that.

(The rack is acrylic BTW)

After I found both magnets are rusted. I searched other forums and it seems that this is a trend with this product. Many others contact the manufacturer for replacements. I opted not too. Something killed everything. I tested all other levels and they were in line. It is the only thing I can think of that would have had that much of an impact.

Here we go again. The wiki warrior has returned. I think the asbestos particles from the home renovation are starting to rot your brain again. Or maybe it's the lead in the paint. Wonder if that'll rust and kill fish also like it's killing your fish knowledge. If rust is good to and is basically just gfo, why wouldn't all tanks just be plumbed with metal piping. Then there would be no need for reactors and what not. Think I'm gonna toss some rebate rods into my sump and replace my plastic mesh on my algea scrubbers with steel grates. Maybe I'll have an increased PO4 reduction. Wonder what wiki would say about it

Sweat I also have 2 of the racks and one rustled as well. They are both out of service. Because of it

Yeah. I had 2 as well. 1 Black and one Clear. I couldn't tell on the black one but just got rid of it to be safe.

No need to be ridiculous, I am not advocating the use of construction grade steel in a reef tank. I was making the point that ferrite magnets pose little to no threat in a reef tank. 2thmaker had a completely rusted out exploded magnet in his sump next to the return pump for a year and you all saw how awesome his sps growth was. I know this because I bought the ATO from him with the exploded rusted out magnet.

Lol not sure why you knock on Wikipedia so much. You do realize that it is the largest source of information on the planet right? Want me to find non Wikipedia articles to support my point?

I can find a dead rat to support any point in wanna make. Importance if finding information to disprove your point and then making educated reasoning informative knowledge with thought. Not just in found it on the Internet sonic must be true. I mean come on trump hates only mexicans right that's all in see on the Internet. Must be true. I'll send him my ex's contact info and maybe he can take care of that for me

I'm not providing TMZ information here. I'm providing scientific data that gives the composition of what these magnets are. But hey I guess the corals growing on rusted sunken ships are BS too? And don't even get me started on how much of a moron Trump is. Voting for Trump only proves you are a sheep following the guise of the Wolf who is ready to eat you. His tax bill only further protects and benefits the rich.
