View Full Version : LED lighting for SPS in a 29G nano?

Just curious what lighting you're using for your sticks if you have a nano? I picked up a super clean 29G Biocube and plan to convert from the 150W HQI to LED and grow SPS.

150w HQI should do fine

True, but I prefer LEDs--much cooler, no recurring bulb replacement costs, and they don't suck down the $$$ like halides. I'm paying $1.75 per kWh up here.

You probably already know this but if not I've heard rapid Led is good. But if it was me I would do a AI prime.

I've bought from rapidled in the past. What I'm really looking for is advice from people who actually have a nano and are successfully growing SPS in them under commercially available LEDs. I may end up retrofitting the hqi fixture just to get the asthetics I want.

I had a 29 gal Bio-Cube HQI which I put an Ecotech Radion Gen 1 over and no trouble growing anything. I currently have this same Ecotech on one side of my 75g test tank and the HQI 150w with a Phoenix bulb on the other. The Radion is the brighter of the two. Sorry, no PAR measurements for you.

The Radion Gen 1 has 34 LED's. However, eight of those are green & red. Here's the exact mix:

8x Cree XP-G Cool White LEDs run at 5w each
8x Cree XP-E Blue LEDs run at 3w each
10x Cree XP-E Royal Blue LEDs run at 3w each
4x Cree XP-E Green LEDs run at 3w each
4x Osram Oslon SSL Hyper Red LEDs run at 3w each

Hope that helps. I'd probably go brighter/stronger if it was dedicated to SPS and you were using some really deep violet and blues.

Thanks. There's really no use in comparing PAR measurements between predominately blue LEDs and any halides.

Have Doyle build u a 2-4 puck setup from the Pucks I used in my 29bc. It'll allow for 6-channels of control. And I have the pwm settings needed for different spectrums.

I'll be running a 120w full spec black box over mine when it goes up

I'm no stranger to DIY LEDs.

levi likes the bluefish nano. All you'd need is ldd-h drivers
