Sorry for your loss.
I don't think there is any solid info to explain this. I had a clam from fragtoberfest die off a few days ago that was placed right next to two other clams that have been in the system for a couple of years now.

I guess I was reading if it's sick or weak any of the clean up crew will go to town on the clam. I just thought it would close up and nothing would get to it.

I had some thing like this happen years ago but there was nothing left completely cleaned out! it turned out be a giant bristle worm that ate mine. sorry that you lost your clam.

I've seen a small one in the sump. I haven't seen any in the main tank.

Bristleworms won't eat a healthy clam. They will go after sick and dying ones though.

Starfish or carnivorous snails will attack clams. Fish will def tear into it once dead. Followed by the clean up crew. Circle of life
