View Full Version : HELLO!!! Im Devin. New to Colorado and this forum.

Good morning all!

Im Devin,

I am 23.
I just moved here from Iowa for work and the obvious wonderful Rocky Mountains.
I race downhill MTB's, Motocross, and love fish tanks.
I have about 14 years experience in naturalistic live plant set ups.

I just got into reef tanks about a year ago after many years of having to get older and get better jobs in order to afford it haha.
I currently have a 12 Gallon Nano cube.
Koralia nano powerhead
MP600 return pump
Kessil A150w TunaBlue LED (new for me, just switched form PC's last week)
Open top tank
I buy my water at the store, only buy the stuff that says Reverse osmosis/distilled
I dont have a refractometer but I run my water at .024 on my hydrometer to compensate for the temperature. Since I was told hydrometers are calibrated at 60 degrees.
I'm still learning a lot and am open to criticism.

For coral I have Candy canes, some green zoas, mushrooms, and some all red LPS coral i dont know the name.

Two weeks ago I had an anemone crawl in the powerhead and blwo himself up into toxic soup, killing almost everyone and thing in my tank. Most coral lived but is still recovering. They dont look super good.
This has brought me to reevaluate my set up and motivated me to find a REEF expert community here in Denver. Looks like I have found it!

Feel free to ask any questions and I'm definitely open to any suggestions on what to do with my aquarium. I just want things to not die. I have been able to keep everything alive for over a year even with the move from Iowa, but I think everything has just been surviving rather than thriving. Once I figure out this forum Ill post some pictures!

Welcome. Lots of tracks for MTB and motocross in the area.

I would get a refractometer ASAP. Hydrometers are notoriously unreliable. Also, there are a ton of knowledgeable people on these forums and on the MASC ones.

Welcome. I would race DH but I don't have time with hockey.

Welcome. Do like Rich said and get a refractometer. Things happen too fast in nano's!

Welcome! I second going to meetings, it helps a lot to see other setups and you don't want to miss this one. I agree with getting a refractometer and add a good test kit to include calcium and alkalinity. The new light should make a big difference. Looking forward to seeing pics!!

Welcome to your family! And yes, please come to the meeting next week

Thanks! Where are the meetings held? Which refractometer works well?

Any of the refractometers are going to be more reliable than a hydrometer because it has to be calibrated with "calibration fluid". You can pick them up locally from a couple of shops. If you get it from Seascape they will calibrate it for you. If you get it from Bulk Reef Supply, a sponsor of the forum and known worldwide, it will come with the fluid and run you about $40 + shipping. If you're up in the Denver area you have more shops available to you that will carry it. Aqua Mart is up there, and they're a sponsor. Aqua Medic is there, and I believe they will have some - also a sponsor.

Alright, Ill have to pick on up here soon. Where are the meetings located? What all happens there?

Our monthly meetings are held at a members home. This gives the chance to see their setup. We also have a bbq or some other type of meal. Along with a raffle and an occasional workshop. This months meeting is at staticreef's home. He has an incredible 1000+ total gallon system with multiple tanks and specialized filtration chambers.

Welcome! Def take the op to be at the meeting this weekend if you can...JJs setup is def awesome

Meh... his tanks are ok. He's got nothing on my 29 total gallon system with a monstrous leather inside of it that prevents the fish from swimming around to the other side. :)
Just kidding. static has one of the nicest private setups I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. I annoy him constantly with questions.

Wow, thats a lot of water.

I will definitely try and make it. I get off work at 5 in Denver.
Should I bring anything?

Welcome aboard Mad! Look forward to seeing you at JJ's crib!

Yep I would like to go. I get off around 5-5:30 in Aurora. Could someone who's attending PM me with the address?

I will try to get some pictures up soon. The Kessil looks extremely blue on my camera and it kind of washes out some of the coral. But Ill post them anyways.
