Started my salt water adventure about three weeks ago. 150 gallon with two live rock, and a quite a few dead but not washed rock. water has been rocking and rolling now for three weeks after i had a fatal wall outlet failure which caused 5 gallons of water to leak out my first night with the pump running... grrr. now it is set up and we have growth. i have used nitro max for a little bit dosing a splash every three days for the first week. no i have some purple spots on the rock... actually all over.... i have some light purple on the back side of a couple rocks... yes they are different types of growth based on visual inspection. the all over look like chicken pox spread out and the back side purple is kind of together. i have green alge growing on the glass and on the rocks for about 10 days. looks cool on some things just to have color and visual movement in the tank but i don't think they are too good for me. lol. i also have some neat looking green spots on some of the rocks. it is forest green growth very small spots. on the rock by the power head it went from a kind of yellow growth (off the only live rock i put in the tank) to more yellow/brown. the sand has gotten dark then "cleaned" up again to white. have black and white sand. running the lights on timer for the day and have the blue running all the time. tank looks cool. My test kit levels are ph 8.0 ammonia 0-.25 no2 5 ppm and no3 was at 40.

when do i know when my "cycle is complete"?? and i can add fish, shrimp, ect...

complete noob here. so any feedback is welcome. ill upload a couple pictures. Thanks guys.

pH is a lil low. I keep mine around 8.2-84. Cycle is complete when Ammonia and nitrite read 0. what are you using for test kits? What is the temp? SG?

Ohhh and welcome to the club!

Welcome! I use photobucket.com with a free account and insert pictures from it. You can insert the weblink into your post. Most people don't run the blues all the time. You might consider having them go off during the night.

SG=specific gravity or salinity. Temp is a lil high. Your cycle is done when your ammonia is 0. Sounds like you're almost there.

Hi! Get a refractometer. I used to use a hydrometer and it became so inaccurate. You can get a new refractometer for about $40 online.

so the ammonia has gone down from .5 to almost 0 in 10 days.

If your reading is just slightly green it's a fair net that you are at 0.

The purple on your rock looks more like a slime algae not coraline. But none the less it's looking good.

Btw, when you copy the link from photo bucket, use the IMG link.

As previously stated, hydrometers can be off by as much as 20% and you are a the very low end now.

When you select your links in photobucket, use the [img] one at the bottom. That posts the image right in your thread.
