My stepson has shown a ton of interest in the hobby. I want to get him something easy to start. Was thinking a little cube or aio? He wants to grow corals? Thoughts, ideas? I don't wanna spend a ton incase the interest wears off.

Could this lighting grow any coral? this larger model features two 36-watt 50/50 compact fluorescent lamps offering 72 total watts or 3 watts of lighting per gallon and 2 built-in LED Nite-Vu Moonlight to illuminate nocturnal behaviors. Measures 18" x 18" x 19-3/4" high. 290 gph. UL-Listed

I'd go with a JBJ Nano. Everything is included. Remember, the smaller the tank, the more involved it is, maintenance wise.

That's what I was thinking. The one with lights above. Do you think that would be able to sustain corals?

All the ones I have seen, yes. I'd stay with zoas and LPS though.

you should get him a 1200 Gallon show tank that is easy maintenance....sort of :)

Agree 100% with murf on more involved with a small tank. My first tank as a kid was a 29g so I would agree again with a jbj nano 28g. Just remember water changes have to be done. Once your tank is super seasoned can probably slack off a bit. Nuvo 38g is another great nano all in one tank. If putting in some fish I would get a two fishies reactor and a skimmer.

+1 on the larger tank I had a 14 and it was a battle to keep every thing in check

If it was me I would hold off for when Petco has there $1 a gallon and get a 30g and a 10g tank and build one form the ground up it would be fun for you guys and you son might have more fun with it and he can tell all his friends that he built the tank and this was me but I seemed to have more respect for some thing that I made then when I was giving it

Or 40b with 20l. And they should be doing the sale soon. Another lesson to learn with saltwater is patience lol

I have my 40 breeder setup and 30 gallon frag tank. Wanted something smaller for his room. Don't want a big tank because if it doesn't work out I'll be taking care of it. Decisions decisions.

+1 with Murfman. Go with the JBJ 12 or 24 setup. I was gonna do the 24 but I ended up getting the 26 I have now in trade for custom lighting help.

The biggest thing with smaller tanks are ammonia and nitrate spikes. But for a 10g a weekly water change of 1g should take care of it.
