Name: Sean
Tanks and sizes: RSM 34D and in the process of planning out a +100gallon
Where you live: Boulder
Years in the hobby: >2 Years
Specific interests: Engineering, automation, ceramics, copepods, zooplankton and phytoplankton

I started AlgaeBarn a little less than a year ago, and I had some amazing support from some SCMAS and MASC members that has allowed me to grow to the level it is today. I would like to become a forum sponsor, but I can't seem to private message people. The AlgaeBarn introduction may be found below.

At AlgaeBarn, LLC, we believe in challenging the status quo. The creation of AlgaeBarn occurred because of the severe lack of premium, live food in the saltwater aquarium market. Even though the benefits of live foods are highly touted, it is nearly impossible to find at any local fish store – and if you do, the quality, freshness, and price are highly questionable. Our competition will tell you that dead phytoplankton is good enough, maybe for them, but we don’t believe so. It lacks the exact thing we desire in our aquariums – biodiversity and life.

We were founded on the belief that you, the customer, deserve the highest quality live products with excellent customer service. Through the use of science, engineering and determination, we believe our cultures are of the highest quality phytoplankton and copepods. Our Biological engineer, Sean, performed independent academic studies upon photobioreactors and has had an offer with the DOE for microalgae research in Washington.

We are currently culturing four strains of live, marine phytoplankton and have designed a proprietary mix that demonstrates very promising results for coral growth, copepod cultivation and zooplankton development. Furthermore, because it is a live product, water quality is also improved.
Currently, we are offering one strain of copepods, Tigriopus. And because of the continued support of the members of Marine Aquarium Society of Colorado, AlgaeBarn has started to cultivate two more strains of highly desirable copepods: Tisbe and Pseudodiaptomus. We will keep the community updated with our progress.

However, we don’t want to stop at just marine aquariums. Phytoplankton has the potential to solve many of the world’s problems. It is a complete food source, providing an array of both amino and fatty acids. It has potential for energy development, reducing our demand upon foreign energy while consuming huge amounts of greenhouse gasses. Our future vision at AlgaeBarn is to provide education opportunities for K-12 students. We would like to incorporate algae-related curriculum into the educational system to provide insight into sustainable, symbiotic, and closed-loop systems. This education opportunity will provide future generations with an early understanding of information that can change the world.

Welcome!! You should post a list of prices and maybe group/bulk prices if applicable? We always love pictures too if you can post pics of your culture station/warehouse.

Again, welcome, thank you for sponsoring, and can't wait to meet you guys eventually!

Hi Zach!

Hi Codeman. I'll go ahead and post a price list. We currently do not offer group buy discounts, but if multiple people get product shipped to one location, then some extra product may find its way into the box. If people are going through alot of product, then we can discuss bulk pricing. We are using some proprietary technology in our labs to reach higher density and populations, so we can't do pictures of the setup right now. But, pictures of densities will be posted :-) We can't wait to meet everyone!

Hey Joe! I hope all is well and your systems are still producing a ton of offspring!

Another thought that I had, I know that there is definitely no exact science to dosing (everyone's systems are different), but is there any recommended dosing amounts for your products? Personally, I have never dosed live phyto, and have only ever had live rots once, and I didn't really know how to add them. Any additional info would be great!

We are pretty conservative with the dosing amount. Just like anything in a marine aquarium, don't make any big changes fast. If you consistently dose phytoplankton, you can dose large amounts. We have a dosing calculator on our website, but prestashop is a resource hog so we are transferring E-Commerce systems. How big of a tank do you have, how heavily is it stocked, and what type of corals?

It's a 200 gallon mixed reef, moderately stocked I'd say. Mostly LPS and softies though...a few SPS mixed in.

So we would recommend adding 100ml every other day for the first week. Then 200ml every other day for the second week. Depending on demand, then we would like to introduce a concentrated phytoplankton product for people with tank systems similar to yours.

The OceanMagik live phytoplankton is really great stuff. We use 4 different strains, each with a different intended purpose. Its rare to find even big companies producing dead phyto with more than 2 strains. What are you goals by dosing? Increased coral coloration? Growth? Improved system health?

Hahaha....yes, yes, and yes!
