View Full Version : thoughts on chinese LEDs

I spoke with their customer service and I can do any layout I wish basically, the combined shipping for 4 units to hang over a standard 90g is 125 and they will discount each unit by $20 if I buy 4 at one time.

I like that I can set the timers different and make a true sunrise and sunset effect while increasing the intensity of the leds at the same time.

I was going to get the RB 48" photon but with the center brace and the side to side effect I wanted to go with multiple units instead of just 1 long unit. The cost of getting 2x of the 24" photon is much more than the 48" so I can stay in the $525 range and get 4 programmable units.

Looks good, i've never had any issues with bridgelux leds at all. If you like those look at THIS (http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/1073325629/CE_RoHS_conform_of_led_cree.html). I actually fixed three of these units for Joe and I am very impressed with the light output and 6-point control-ability across 3 channels (whites, blues and moon leds). Am thinking of getting two of these for my next project on the list after the 40B.

will they do full spectrum customs? also when I was reading about those it looks like the controller is for just timers and the knobs actually do all of the dimming manually, I want to do sunrise/sunset type of auto dimming.

There are a few companies on there that will do full spectrum. The timer has 6 points of brightness control for your sunrise sunset effects as well as for the three moon lights. With this model I believe the knobs are also there to fine tune your colors, but I could be mistaken. Here is another Link (http://twilightgroups.en.alibaba.com/product/593446704-212793286/Dimmable_Best_light_for_coral_reef_finsh_tank_120w _led_aquarium_light.html) to the same supplier that offers you the color choices. If you need optics to they have 90 and 60 degree also. Even with these being run at 2W i'll never make the mistake of hitting the power button for full-on again while looking at the LEDs. I couldn't see for 5 minutes.....lol

what about this http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/1150276701/New_Malibu_S120_aquarium_led_light.html

they use meanwell drivers and can pick between cree xpe or bridgelux leds. I like that you can daisy chain them. Near the bottom is the actual product picture so you can see the layout of the 40 LED's. I emailed them for a price quote on 4 units and a 48" or 1.2M aluminum rail kit and the wired controller. 4 channels and 8 points on each channel with complete custom spectrum and LED placement.

I like how thin they are as well, now just to find out the price. I really do like the 8 points per channel as you can really get creative using multiple units and times to get a great effect both sunrise, sunset and lunar cycle.

Those are nice too....I forgot to add it to my favorites on my acct....lol.

if you daisy chain them will you end up with essentially 1 long light with 4 channels and 8 points per channel? What I want is 4 lights with 16 channels and 8 points per channel... basically so I can do the side to side effect with sunrise and sunset. I think it is a cool effect and something I have liked since I saw it on a macna video

I'm not sure if they use an analog or pwm dimming signal for their lights. But if you're looking for 16-channels you're gonna have to figure out the connections for their controller and get the StormX by Coralux. Or just get 4 separate units with the controller and offset each one.

I figured if I looked long enough I could find the actual Reef Breeders light directly from the Chinese manufacturers... big price difference

it even uses a quote from the forums where someone is saying thanks to RB so for sure this is the exact same light

the 180w that has 60 LED is $190 shipped and it is full spectrum free of charge, you pick the layout. You can use 460nm, 450nm, 2700-20000k whites, 660nm, 420nm, 530nm, 580nm, and UV. It says a minimum of 10 pieces but they will sell less you just have to ask.

there is also http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/638903713/aquarium_led_lighting_dimmable.html which has the universal plug to connect multiple units like the RB one

Be sure to get a good quote on the shipping and see if you can find out what the customs fee will be. The customs fee will probably be a COD charge you have to pay when UPS or whomever delivers it. Also factor in the fee for processing your payment to get a true cost before you commit to buy direct from China. I did a direct buy before and the total cost was cheaper than buying from a US supplier, but shipping one light back to china for repair once would have eaten any savings away.

The lights 89Delta fixed for me (because I got them wet) will be for sale, I just won't get time to post them until next week. If you want to check them out, you are welcome to stop by next week. I have a bunch of stuff I need to post.

good point, I have not yet checked into what the customs fee will be. I have the stand for a 75g and a 40g long sump for it as well as a 40B and 20L for a fowlr setup and would like to get the same lights for both tanks so that it all looks uniform. any way to figure out what the customs fee will be? I was quoted 160 total in shipping for 4 units to my works address. if you use PayPal is it 2% or 3% for the fee? so far without the customs fee but with 3% for PayPal it is still under 800 for 4 units and they are the same ones as the photon 16 so that is compared to $1280. My mother works for a company that does a ton of shipping with FedEx including international so she gets a huge discount and she priced it for me at under $40 per unit to ship back incase of warranty issue.

Am talking with a sales manager now and i'll ask him what the average customs fee is....never even thought of that even after ordering so many electronics parts from there without issues.
