how high above my tank should I place my light?

Depends on the wattage. I would start with 8 - 10 inches above the water. Make sure you have room to raise it if needed. What lights do you have?

Nice! I would mount at 8" and just dim them. Then over time you can turn them up as needed.

ok so they are about 11 in above but my rocks are getting brown aswell as my sand

That is most likely diatoms. How long has the tank been running?

everything from my transferred over to this 75 plus 30gal sump it is going to be 2 weak this weakend

Very common during this stage. I had a sand sifting goby in mine from a transfer and he cleaned it all up
