So I deep cleaned my skimmer, took it apart, cleaned and oiled the pump and cleaned the cup and neck.

Probably better to be cleaning on a regular basis. :) At least that was the instructions with my Remora; not sure if it matters so much for the bigger ones.

mine gets cleaned about once a month- the inside covering reduces the diameter by about half an inch in build up so it's pretty needed by then.

I have the same skimmer as freedom and it does get clogged from buildup. About every 2 weeks I take a spatula and go around on the inside of the cup and neck (wife was not pleased I used her spatula; mine for fish now...). That seems to help the build up without doing a complete cleaning. Kind of like the self cleaning attachments for skimmers just not as often.

Do you use the drain on the left side with the valve to remove most of the liquid or do you run it pretty dry in the first place?

Yes, a small hose is conected to a 5 gallon jug with a hole drilled in the top, every few days I open the valve to empty out any liquid thay has collected, not as high tech as the avast locker but it works and was free.

I clean my cup inside and out everytime the cup fills up...about every 2 weeks at the longest. Wife hates teh smell it leaves in the entry bathroom when I do too lol.
